Keeping our Promises on Education
High-Level Event, 2 May 2007
Berlaymont Building of the European Commission, Brussels, Belgium
The objective of the conference is to seek concrete proposals and commitments for action to deliver on the promise to give all the world's children a full primary education by 2015. This promise is a UN Millennium Development Goal. Firm political engagement is required now to deliver on this promise as today 77 million children are still out of school and children in at least 75 countries risk missing their full cycle of primary schooling by 2015.
The Event will be hosted by the European Commission and co-convened by the World Bank and the UK Government. It follows on an earlier agreement in Singapore in September 2006 by Gordon Brown, Chancellor of the Exchequer of the UK, Louis Michel, Member of the European Commission responsible for Development, and Paul Wolfowitz, President of the World Bank.
Conference participants will include ministers of development and finance of the EU Member States, the OECD-DAC donor countries and developing countries, leaders of international organisations, civil society organisations and the private sector as well as Members of the European Parliament, individual advocates and experts. Conference attendance is on invitation only.
